Assistant

Ask the book.

Any question about leading a hotel or a restaurant, service, or a career in the industry, answered from the book and its library.

Every answer links to its source. Questions are anonymous.

How it works

Type a question and the assistant reads the companion library, which holds the site's answers to common questions, the key ideas, the Field Guide, the Toolkit, the roles and careers pages, the glossary and the verified quotations from the three books. It answers only from those pages, cites the page behind each sentence and links to it. When the pages do not cover a question it says so and points to the closest page rather than guessing.

The answers are a guide to the library, in the book's spirit. The book itself, with the full interviews and the argument in order, is the thing to read when an answer makes you want more. Quotations are reproduced only when they appear word for word on a page of this site.

A fair use limit applies: a reader can ask a dozen questions a day, and the assistant rests when the day's allowance for the whole site is used. Questions are kept in an anonymous log, without names or addresses, to find what the library should answer next.
